I am a former business owner, and an experienced science teacher of 16 years. I use different methods to get my students to grasp the subject matter we're working on, depending on the student's strengths. I explain concepts in different ways, try to tie them in with the student's own experience, tell relevant stories from my own experience, and use historical and current events to get your student to grasp difficult concepts. Reinforcement can include verbal review, games, and repetition where appropriate. I was raised by parents who were teachers, using phonics and "drill and kill" math exercises. Though downplayed at times since the 1970's, these basic skills served me well, allowing me to work at a faster pace and levels several years above my peers in English and Math throughout my K-12 education.
School was always fun for me, and my favorite subjects were science and math. My continued interest in science keeps me up to date on what is happening in the world today.
I vowed when I became a teacher that I would never be one of the boring, tired teachers that used to drive me nuts in high school and college. Your student will reap the benefits of my experience and interest.
